The ancient theatre of Epidaurus is located at the southeastern end of the sanctuary that was dedicated to the healing god of antiquity, Asclepius, at the Asclepius Epidaurus.

It is built on the western slope of Mount Kynorthi. It is located near today’s Lygourio in Argolida and belongs to the Municipality of Epidaurus. It is considered the most perfect ancient Greek theatre in terms of acoustics and aesthetics.

The ancient theatre was constructed by the architect Polycleitus the Younger as Pausanias mentions. Pausanias praises the theatre for its symmetry and beauty. With a maximum capacity of 13,000 – 14,000 spectators, the theatre hosted the musical, odic and dramatic games included in the cult of Asclepius. It was also used as a means of treating patients, as it was believed that attending dramatic performances had beneficial effects on the mental and physical health of patients.

The monument attracts a large number of Greek and foreign visitors and is used for the presentation of ancient drama performances. The first performance at the theatre of Epidaurus was Sophocles’ tragedy Electra, staged in 1938, directed by Dimitris Rontiris and starring Katina Paxinou and Eleni Papadakis.

The Little Theatre of Epidaurus is located in the area called Nisi, near the port of Old Epidaurus. It was the theatre of the ancient city-state and, apart from theatrical performances, it hosted religious and political celebrations. This theatre was discovered in the early 1970s, under an olive tree estate and the restoration process continues to this day.

Its construction began in the 4th century BC and was originally built to meet the needs of this small city-state, so its size was not large. It had 18 rows of seats and could accommodate about 2,000 spectators. Some sites have inscriptions showing that the theatre was dedicated to the god Dionysius and was built in sections.

The walls, the foundations of buildings, the large amphorae and the paved sections are submerged a few metres below sea level and just a few metres from the coast, on Kalymnos beach.

The museum was founded in 1902 and opened in 1909 to present objects discovered in the ancient area of Epidaurus and the surrounding area.

The museum includes several major reconstructions of temples and architectural elements, especially those found in the Asclepieion.

In the green mountain peaks of Epidaurus, between the villages of Adami and Koliaki, the “Monastery of Kalami” or “Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Kalami”, built in 1616, rises.

Today the monastery attracts many pilgrims, who come here to experience the solemn atmosphere created by the melodic chanting of the nuns in the evocative candlelight and to be accommodated in the guesthouses of the monastery with the wonderful view, which soothes the soul.
